December 2004
It’s December 22, 2004 and “Baby It’s Cold Outside!” Today is also the Winter Solstice which is the shortest day of the year. After today the days start getting longer. I have Holiday News for you.
Trail Planning in New Carlisle
I attended a meeting in early December chaired by National Trail Parks and Recreation District. The District is the overall planner for new trails in Clark County. The county in cooperation with the city of New Carlisle and Bethel Township is working towards building new trails in Western Clark County,
The first segment of trail to be built will be entirely in the City of New Carlisle. The trail will start at New Carlisle Middle School in the Northern section of the City and then run South to connect with West Lake Elementary School. From West Lake it will head West to White Pine Street. Then the trail will travel through Brubaker Park and Smith Park. The trail will end at SR 235 South of town at a popular hot dog stand. The first section of trail will be 2.9 miles in length. It will cost approximately $800K and is planned to be built in the Spring of 2007.
Next Spring I'll walk the trail route with the developers and put up a new web page for the as yet un-named trail.
Xenia-Jamestown
Connector Trail Update
The Xenia Jamestown Connector is almost complete. Bad weather stopped work late in December. The
contractor was building a fence when weather stopped their efforts. The trail is completely paved. Next Spring seeding of the berm and signage are all that is left to complete this new
6.5 mile trail section from Jasper Road west to Jamestown.
Ohio to Erie Trail Update
As of December 2004 Greene County Parks and Recreation also has completed
initial clearing and grading of 6.5 miles of trail from East of London to within 2 miles of the Franklin County line. This Ohio to Erie trail portion is a 6.5 mile section from Maple Street in London to Wilson Road to the East.
It will be paved in crushed stone in the Spring of 2005. After the trail crosses into Franklin County it will follow the Camp Chase
Rail Trail line and will go through Battelle Darby
Creek Metro Park in Franklin County. See
the map that the Friends of Madison County Parks and
Trail posted to their website that shows the connection between the trail
East from London into Columbus, Ohio.
Buck Creek Trail Extension
The Buck Creek Trail extension from Old Reid Park to Buck Creek State Park is completely paved and is useable. In Spring 2005 the trail will be striped, signs will be added and the berm will be planted. But if you are ready to face the cold weather we are facing now, you can ride the trail.
Mad River Recreation Trail (North Bank)
A new .5 mile trail was built by the City of Dayton with the assistance of the Miami Conservancy District and partial funding by NatureWorks.
The new trail starts at Point Park which is just North of the Keowee Street Bridge over the Mad River at Valley Street. The trail goes down the bank to the river level on the North bank of the river and travels about .5 mile to Webster Street. At its end it is on the top of the levee so that it connects to
Deeds Park at Deeds Point. All that remains to be done in Spring 2005 is some final grading and seeding. I am informed that this trail segment is intended to connect the North Dayton neighborhood to the overall trail system.
I'll get some pictures of the new trail section and put them along with a description on the Mad River Trail page.
Regards to all,
