Trail Construction and Improvements
Trail South of Middletown
Is Complete – As reported last month the Great Miami River Recreation Trail in Warren and Butler Counties is being extended from Dayton South 28 miles to join an existing trail in Hamilton, Ohio. The four mile section from Bicentennial Park South to Old State Route 73
was under construction in 2005. I was informed that the trail is open .I
understand that the trail will be dedication Spring 2006. There is a Staging/parking area off of Route 73 near the Miami River at almost the South end of the new trail section.
Beavercreek Trail Connector Dedicated - I attended the dedication of the Beavercreek Trail Connector recently. As you may remember this is a trail spur North from Beavercreek Community Park (US-35 at Factory Road) on the Creekside Trail North about ¾ miles to Rotary Park in Beavercreek. The trail crosses Dayton-Xenia Road at a new cyclist-friendly signal (it tells you how many seconds you have to cross the road) on its way to Rotary Park. It is planned that this trail spur will be extended North into the Hunter’s Rider development of Beavercreek. The spur makes safe access to the Miami Valley Trail System available to Beavercreek residents.

Changes and Improvements
Trail Etiquette and Safety Page - This month I added more safety tips to the page and added an additional page. The new page is the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws that applies to both cyclists and motorists. I think you’ll find what the law “actually says” about cyclists’ responsibilities of interest to you. It also explains the responsibility motorists have towards cyclists on the road.
New Dayton Daily News Blog on Cycling
The Dayton Daily News has started a number of “Blogs” (Web Logs) on their website. One of them is called
“Fuel for Thought” written by DDN reporters Ken McCall and Jim Bebbington. The Blog is about commuting to work via cycling. I noticed it several weeks ago. The link above is to the article posted Thursday November 17, 2005 by Ken McCall. I had called and talked to him earlier about his columns and what I was doing to help trail users and in his 17 November article he said some very complimentary things about me and this website. So “Thank You Ken McCall!”.
If you have a minute add a post to Ken and Jim's articles. Perhaps we can
get a "buzz" going in the Dayton area so that the city fathers
learn that a number of cyclists commute via bike to work daily.
Website Doubles Usage for 2005 - This year the website exceeded 887,000 hits for the month of July 2005. This exceeds our best month for 2004 in August where the site saw 435,000 hits. This is a 203% increase in customer usage of the site in one year. I am hoping to exceed 1 million hits for a month in 2006. I hope that the increase in usage is because my readers find this website of use to them in planning their use of our wonderful Miami Valley Trail System.
