Dear Friends: It’s Tuesday15 March. I have some trail news for you. Please continue reading.
Trail Construction and Improvements
Little Miami Scenic Trail Open House was held 1 March 2011 – Below is a statement by the Hamilton County Park District about the alternatives to reaching Lunken Airport on the Little Miami Scenic Trail. They said:
| “"The Park District recently completed a Feasibility Study to determine whether the Little Miami Scenic Trail Extension should be located in the "Elstun Corridor" (which extends south between Elstun Road and the Little Miami River to the Magrish Preserve), or in the "Beechmont Corridor" (which extends west along Beechmont Avenue to the Armleder/Lunken Airport Trail). The purpose of the public meeting on March 1, 2011, is to present the findings of the Feasibility Study and to solicit public comments on the study recommendations. Beechmont Corridor Alternatives The Beechmont Corridor concept involves extension of the Little Miami Scenic Trail west across the Little Miami River to the Armleder/Lunken Trail system. Three alternatives were evaluated in this corridor including Alternative la (trail alignment and bridge on the north side of Beechmont Avenue with connector trail east to Elstun Road/Mount Washington), Alternative lb (trail alignment and bridge on the south side of Beechmont Avenue with connector trail east to Elstun Road/Mount Washington), and Alternative lbw (trail alignment and bridge on the south side of Beechmont Avenue with sidewalk connection to Elstun Road/ Mount Washington. Elstun Corridor Alternatives The Elstun Corridor concept involves extension of the Little Miami Scenic Trail south between Elstun Road and the Little Miami River to the Magrish Preserve. Five alternatives were evaluated including Alternative 2 (trail alignment along Elstun Road shoulder), Alternatives 3a and 3b (trail alignments located in the Little Miami River floodplain adjacent to Elstun Road), Alternative 4 (trail alignment located in the center of the Little Miami River floodplain), and Alternative 5 (trail alignment located in the Little Miami River floodplain and adjacent to the Little Miami River). No Build Alternative The No Build alternative involves leaving the existing and planned Little Miami Scenic Trail "as is" with no extension to the Ohio River Trail. Under this scenario, the Little Miami Scenic Trail extension from Newtown would terminate at the existing CRC parking lot/trailhead. PRELIMINARY PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE (1bw) The Little Miami Scenic Trail Feasibility Study concluded that Alternative 1bw is the preliminary Preferred Alternative for the Little Miami Scenic Trail Extension project. This conclusion was based on consideration of flood potential, environmental impacts, engineering/utility constraints, construction costs, and 20-year operation/maintenance costs. The exhibits presented at tonight's meeting further describe the factors involved in identifying Alternative 1bw as the preliminary Preferred Alternative. Comments can be submitted at the meeting or mailed to the Hamilton County Park District by March 16, 2011." A Thank You! to Mr. John Biederman for providing this information on the 1 March 2011 meeting. |
Trail Planning for Connection from Wilmington (Clinton County) to Circleville (Pickaway County)
- Last Fall I told you by updating my Approved Multi-Use Trail Projects and this newsletter about the fact that the Clinton County Trails Coalition had received a Clean Ohio Trails Grant to buy all of the 28 miles of railbed from Wilmington Northeast through Washington Court House in Fayette County to end at New Holland (the border to Pickaway County) to be called the Clinton-Fayette Friendship Trail. I did not until recently that the Fayette County Parks folks were the ones who found out that Dayton, Power and Light was interested in selling the old right of way in Clinton, Fayette and Pickaway Counties. In December 2010 the Pickaway County Parks Department purchased the entire right-of-way in Pickaway County all of the way East to Circleville!! It is possible that sometime in the future we will have a 50+ mile trail all of the way from Wilmington Northeast to Circleville. And as it goes through Washington Courthouse it will connect with the Tri-County Triangle Trail. The Clinton County Trails Coalition is working on obtaining all of the right-of-way from Wilmington West to the Little Miami Scenic Trail at Morrow. Which means the trail in Clinton, Fayette and Pickaway counties may someday connect to the Little Miami Scenic Trail?

New Map of Little Miami Scenic Trail
– A member of Miami Valley Rail Trails; Mr. Lonnie Burger built a new map of the Little Miami Scenic Trail with mileage markings all of the way South to the trail’s end at the Little Miami Golf Center. I have replaced my old maps with Lonny’s. You’ll see it on most of the Little Miami Scenic Trail webpages and on the
Trail Maps Page. To see the map

MVRPC Bike Map 2011 Available Soon - I am informed that
MVRPC will very soon take delivery from the printer the 2011 version of the
very useful Recreational Trail System Map. This is the third version
of the map which had a 2005 and 2008 version (updated in 2010). Check
MVRPC's website in a week or two to get your new map.
New Bike Route Numbering System for Ohio’s Bike Trails – Our mutual friend Mr. Shawn Richardson of Columbus, Ohio is the man that in 2000 suggested that all of Ohio’s Trails have a Route Number and wrote the document above to implement his suggestion. Trails in the Miami Valley have adopted his trail numbering system for years. Last month I told you about trail numbering changes to accommodate the Ohio To Erie Trail’s request to be “Ohio Route #1”. I just got his latest version and once I get some time to process the files, I will make them available to you; hopefully next month. You can see the trail numbering system in the Miami Valley on my: About Multi-Use Trail Names and Route Numbers page . Thank You Shawn for your efforts!

| Every month in this portion of my newsletter, I link to one webpage (or the beginning page of a group of webpages that refer to one trail) in this space. I do this so that my readers, who may not have ever seen that webpage get an opportunity to find it (and perhaps find some use of it). |
Interactive Maps Page This month's featured webpage is the Interactive Maps Page. There you can find out almost anything about any trail in the Miami Valley. Take a look. I’m sure you’ll find the maps most useful to your trail use. When you use this feature on the website, please notice that the colors that are used for each trail are identical to the colors on the MVRPC map that was revised in 2011 (coming out in a week or two). This was on purpose to make it easier for you to navigate. Also please check out a great videos that they have added to each of the maps.
