Miami Valley RailTrails
Newsletter
October 2007
It’s Monday 11 October 2007. Here is
the news about trails in the Miami Valley. Please read on.
Trail Construction and Improvements
Construction on Stillwater Recreation Trail - The Miami Conservancy District has announced maintenance work to be accomplished on the trail starting October 15, 2007. Their announcement is as follows:
“Stillwater River Recreation Trail Work Scheduled
Riders can easily detour around construction
Reconstruction of nearly a half mile of the Stillwater River Recreation Trail is set to begin on Monday, Oct. 15. The work will be done in two areas – just south of the Siebenthaler Bridge in DeWeese Park; and just north of the Ridge Avenue Bridge, south to the suspension bridge connecting Triangle Park and Island Metro Park.
‘There should be room to detour around the work’ says Hans Landefeld, recreation trail manager for the Miami Conservancy District.
The construction will widen the trail pavement where possible along DeWeese Parkway.
Reconstruction of the trail – which was built in the early 1980s – will bring the trail to today’s standards. Work should be completed before the end of the year.”
Construction on trail from Triangle Park North to Taylorsville
MetroPark. - As I told you last month, Five Rivers MetroParks has started on the 7.5 mile trail segment to close the gap between downtown Dayton at Triangle MetroPark to the existing trail alongside Rip Rap Road that goes through Taylorsville MetroPark. I took pictures of this new trail under construction last week and I have updated the webpage for your reading pleasure. This trail segment is planned to be done early next year (2008), but they are making very good progress and may be done this Fall.
Trail Construction Plans in Downtown Cincinnati
- Hamilton County planners have approved a “temporary trail” from Lunken Airport to Friendship Park in downtown Cincinnati on the “Oasis rail line” to downtown Cincinnati. For those of you familiar with downtown Cincinnati, this is the almost unused railbed that ends at Sawyer’s Point to meet the Purple People Bridge across the Ohio River to Kentucky. . I understand that this trail segment will be built with private funds. When fund-raising starts for this much needed trail, I will make an announcement, and will be asking for support.
Trail Work on Clark County Trails
- I am informed that work is ongoing in Clark County as follows:
Prairie Grass Trail – Reconstruction starts Fall 2007 (It may be done by the end of the year) East of South Charlestown. There is a detour for about 40 feet of trail.
Buck Creek Trail – The trail will be cut in two until July 2008 for the Sherman Avenue Bridge construction. There is a detour in
place.
Seal- Coating of Creekside Trail
- Greene County Recreation & Parks seal coated the Creekside Trail starting 10 October 2007, at the Greene County line about 300 yards West of the I-675 bridge. They coated all the way East to Xenia Station. I sent a warning to my readers on 9 October to warn them that wet seal-coat is very slippery. By the time you read this, the work will be complete.
Website Changes and Improvements
New Photos on Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Northern Segment) – That is the official name of the trail that, when finished, will run from Triangle MetroPark in downtown Dayton to the finished seven miles of trail in Taylorsville MetroPark and South alongside Rip Rap Road. I told you about it above, but I’m taking credit for the new pictures again here.

Miami
Valley Trails Page - Did you know that the Miami Valley RailTrails website is tracking 303 miles of multi-use trail? You should look at my Miami Valley Trails page. There I keep al list of every trail that I am tracking with its mileage. Currently the total is 303 miles in what we call the “Miami Valley.” At the bottom of the page there is a table that contains a list of the
trails that are connected. There are currently 205.7 miles of connected trail in the area. The page also tells you what trails are connected to each other which can be helpful when planning a trail ride.
Announcements of Upcoming Events
Street Smarts - The Ohio Bicycling Federation is having several sessions for on street riding. See Events (link below)
MVRPC will be holding three feedback sessions to tell the public the results of the surveys that were collected in July. See the events page (Link below).
This is a new area of the month
events page. Here each month I'll tell you about a page on this website that
you may have never seen.
Ohio Trails List – This month’s page is my Railtrails, Towpaths and Other Trails in Ohio. On it I have provided information to every multi-use trail in Ohio. On this page I have an alphabetical list of every trail in Ohio. If you’d like to look by regions (such as Southwest or Northeast for example) you can click on this page to see my Counties & Regions in Ohio pages. There you can select a region of Ohio and then from it select which county you are interested in. You see a listing of every trail in that county. I provide these pages to my users who would like to ride somewhere else in Ohio besides the Miami Valley. I don’t why they would want to do that since we have about one half of all the trails (and the best ones I think) in Ohio. On each page that has a map you will see that they are courtesy of the Ohio Department of Ohio Transportation Biking Page. I have a link from each picture to their webpage of trails in Ohio. Thanks ODOT!
Regards to all,
