Miami Valley RailTrails Newsletter
April 2002

Dear Miami Valley RailTrails List Readers

14 April 2002 and its raining in Dayton, Ohio

This is the fifth email that I've sent to you via our new mailing list at Microsoft and I have news for you.

  1. Bike Miami Valley. I was saddened to hear in March that Bike Miami Valley, the area's bicycling advocacy organization had to eliminate their one paid position. Because of lack of funds they had to terminate their Executive Director. Bike Miami Valley has had an active role in the development of the trail system in the Miami Valley. Let's hope they can get back to work soon.

  2. Miami To Miami Trail Planning. The so-called Miami To Miami trail was looking for input recently. The trail, which is in the planning stages would be built in Warren County and run East to West connecting the Great Miami River Recreation Trail to the Little Miami Scenic Trail. The organization is planning the route of the trail and will no doubt begin seeking funding in the near future. There is no date to begin construction at this time. As you'll remember the Great Miami River Recreation Trail is being extended South from Crains Run MetroPark to Hamilton in stages. The first construction will be from Crains Run 4 miles South to Franklin. This trail is being developed by the Miami Conservancy District.

  3. Jamestown Connector continues planning. In Greene County planning continues for the Jamestown Connector. This trail, when built, will start at the Xenia Station and run SouthEast to Jamestown eventually connecting to Washington Courthouse. Greene County Parks, the developer of the trail, is seeking funding for Phase I which will be to assess the 9 bridges and culverts that will have to be constructed to make the trail a reality. Phase II will be to construct the tunnel under US -35 to get the trail out of Xenia. Phases III, IV and V will be the actual trail construction through Jamestown to Washington Courthouse. The trail will meet with the Tri-County Triangle Trail, which is in construction in Fayette, Ross and Highland Counties.

  4. Mountain Bike Trail Opens. The new trail was built in John Bryan State Park. The two-mile trail opened in March 2002. The trail begins and ends at the park's Arboretum loop, which is a double track. The new off-road mountain bicycle trail will be open from sunrise to sunset and is only a single track 12" to 16" wide so the trail will be one way.

  5. Cedarville Trail News I'm told that the last obstacle to continued to build the trail which is already complete from Xenia Station through Cedarville and South Charleston, is almost over. There has been litigation over the right-of-way in Madison County but I understand that the problem will be over soon. I'm told that funding is available and that requests for bid will be developed this Spring. The slogan used at the dedication of the Cedarville to South Charleston link last November can now be used again. "On To London!"

  6. Miami Conservancy District website revised The Conservancy District has completed redeveloped their website. I told you quite a bit about the new website in my last newsletter. Now they have added "Trail Construction Information" which will be of great use to those who use the Montgomery County trails.

That’s all I have for today and this year. Enjoy yourself riding our beautiful new trails. I'll be seeing all of you on the trails this year.
