Miami Valley RailTrails
Newsletter
October-November 2002
Dear Miami Valley RailTrails List Readers - 3 November 2002 and this newsletter is late.
"It's been quiet this week in Lake Wobegon..." <joke>
In October I had minor surgery with convalescence as well as a out-of-state funeral I had to attend. So the October newsletter has become by default an October-November one. I'll send another newsletter out this month if the news warrants it. As you know cycling is about over for this year. Construction on trails has stopped to next year. But I was able to add a new web page to the site in the last few weeks. For more see below.
New on Miami Valley RailTrails site.
First I'm going to tell you about what is new on the Miami Valley RailTrails site.
New Hydraulic Canal Path in Piqua . The Piqua Parks and Recreation Department have built a beautiful 2.2 mile extension to their Piqua Linear Park. The new trail segment runs North from French Park to Swift Run Lake near the water plant on State Route 66. See also Piqua Parks and Recreation City Parks Map. We walked the trail several weeks ago, took pictures and put up the new web page. I must say for a short trail segment the Hydraulic Canal Path is one of the most scenic. I'd recommend you see it, ride it, run on it or cycle it. A word of caution. The trail is bounded on the North by the Hydraulic Canal and on the South by about a 25' drop. Most of the trail is not fenced so you need to exercise a bit of caution when using the trail.
About Bicycle Route Numbers and Trail Names As you remember I put a new page on the site last month and told you about it. I have used the trail route numbers on all of the trails in the Miami Valley that I know are using them. I think eventually the trail numbering system of Shawn Richardson may make the trail naming problem more manageable. See New Trail Numbering System on the Sept 2002 newsletter.
New Trail Construction -Here I get to tell you about what trails are being built for your cycling (walking, running and rollerblading pleasure)
Hydraulic Canal Trail in Piqua. See above for more detail.
Other News This is other news in the area that affects trail use.
Five Rivers MetroParks has bought more land along the Stillwater River. As I learn what that might mean to trail construction along the Stillwater River, I'll tell you. Other than that, construction is over for the year but land acquisition and trail planning goes on. I'll report that to you as I learn it.
Well. That's about all for October-November 2002.
