All transportation projects in an area are managed by  a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). They plan for and fund bicycle projects as well. This page will portray status of funded multi-use trail projects in the Miami Valley. Funds will include Federal Transportation Funds as well as Clean Ohio Funds  Bicycle trail projects are funded by the following:

Please Note: Some of the trail projects on this page are marked as "(Completed Oct. 2009)" in the "Construction Year" column of the information. I have left them there to show you what has been accomplished by the trail developers in the Miami Valley over the last few years.

August 2010 - I have added the Round 6 Clean Ohio Trail Grants for the local area.

March 2010 - I have added the CY 2009 CMAQ Funds approved 5 March 2010 for trail development in the Miami Valley.

October 2009 - I have added information about the 2009 Clean Ohio Grants to the page.

August 2008 - MVRPC's Long Range Transportation Plan was approved by the Federal Highway Administration. In Chapter VII of the document are the approved (funded) and proposed Regional Bikeway and Pedestrian Projects. I have cross referenced them to the first two tables, MVRPC and Clean Ohio, below. They are also referenced by the Regional Bikeway Map

May 2009 - I have added the MVRPC of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds AKA 2009 Stimulus Funds Projects. Details of all the projects are available at  MVRPC

Explanation of Projects -  Here we will explain what each approved project is, the current status of the project and the time scale for development.

1. Land Acquisition (DP&L) - Land Acquisition of 11 miles of right-of-way from Greenville to Union City, Ohio - This acquisition will allow Greenville to be connected to the existing Union City Gateway at Union City, Oh. Eventually the trails may be connected to the Cardinal Greenway in Indiana at Union City, Indiana.

2. Phase II "Beyond First Mile"Land Acquisition of right of way West from Gettysburg towards Greenville - This additional funding will allow Darke County to continue the construction currently underway called "The First Mile" towards Greenville.

3. Lytle Road to Eldean Road Project - Construction of Great Miami River Recreation Trail from Eldean Road South about 1.4 miles to Lytle Road. This will connect Piqua with Troy in Miami County. - This trail section will be close the gap between Montgomery County and Piqua in Miami County.

4. Extension of Beavercreek Trail Connector - This 4,600 foot extension of the "Rotary Park Connector" will add the Hunter's Ridge community to those who have trail access.

5. Clinton County Friendship Trail - Land Acquisition of 28 miles of railbed from Wilmington Northeast to Washington Court House and the Fayette County line. The idea that a parks district could buy in one parcel a 28 mile railbed is astounding! When funds to build what they are calling the Clinton County Friendship Trail are secured this railbed will enable Wilmington and Clinton County to connect to the Tri-County Triangle Trail in Fayette, Highland and Ross counties. The City of Washington Courthouse already owns the railbed from Washington Courthouse East to the end of the Xenia-Jamestown Connector which currently ends at the Fayette County line.

6. Tri-County Triangle Trail -  Ross County received funds to complete six miles of the trail from Washington Courthouse Southeast to Chillicothe, essentially finishing this leg of the three legs of the trail. When the Tri-County Triangle Trail is able to build West to the end of the Xenia-Jamestown Connector they will join what I have begun to call the Miami Valley Trails System . And as the Clinton County Trails Coalition is able to build from Wilmington Northeast to Washington Courthouse, Clinton County will join the overall trails system.

7. Great Miami River Recreation Trail Extension - Butler County will build 1.9 miles of trail in the Rentschler Preserve in Fairfield. This will begin to close the gap between the existing trail in Hamilton and the Southern end of the trail in Middletown. See Great Miami River Recreation Trail in Butler and Hamilton Counties.

This project will create a 1450 foot long, 5 foot
wide bike lane along E. Central Avenue between
Marina Drive and S. Alex Road by utilizing the
existing pavement in the right turn lane. This
existing 10 foot wide turn lane will be divided into a
5 foot bike lane and 5 foot tree lawn. This will be
accomplished by moving the existing curb 5 feet to
the south. The bike lane will be separated from the
thru traffic with pavement markings. The bike lane
will connect to the existing Great Miami Trail at
Marina Drive with a 150 foot long, 10 foot wide bike
trail.

Explanation of Projects -  Here we will explain what each approved project is, the current status of the project and the time scale for development.

  1. Grange Hall Road Widening Project -   The City of Beavercreek in 2010 has widened Grange Hall Road, adding new sidewalks and curbs to the road. Once that work is complete (and some new drainage lines are installed) work should begin on building a short trail segment on the East side of Grange Hall Road South from the staging area to Research Blvd.

  2. North Fairfield Road Widening Project -

  3. Iron Horse Trail - Southeast Bikeway Corridor (City of DaytonThis project will extend the Iron Horse Trail from its current terminus at East Stroop Road at Wilmington Northwest from the trail alongside Hempstead Station Road to the University of Dayton at Irving Road. See Iron Horse Trail to downtown Dayton via Oakwood  (Planned for 2012)

  4. Iron Horse Trail - Southeast Bikeway Corridor (City of Kettering - This construction is a part of the overall construction mentioned in 3 (Above). The trail will run Southeast from the University of Dayton to the existing trail in Kettering. The money in #3 above is for the City of Dayton to construct part of the trail. The funds in #4 (here) are for the City of Kettering to build their portion of the trail.

Map References For example look at project #6 below. It's the planned Bellbrook to Spring Valley connection. I have added a column to the chart on left called "Map Ref." This trails reference is "C10". So go to the map and find "C10". It's in Greene County and it's color is brown. Looking at the map legend, that brown color is identified as the Germantown - Bowersville Connector. And you can see that some day we may have a trail from Bowersville in extreme Southeast Greene County to Germantown in Montgomery County.

STP -    Surface Transportation Program

Explanation of Projects -  Here we will explain what each approved project is, the current status of the project and the time scale for development.

  1. Beavercreek Station Parking Facility - This is a staging area next to the Creekside Trail that will include, parking, a rustic station with lighting, inside restrooms and water. The Station will be at the intersection of Old Mill Lane at the trail. Completion is planned for the Spring of 2011.

  2. Grange Hall Road Bikepath  (Nominal Name) -  This is a short bike spur that will run South from the intersection of the Creekside Trail and Grange Hall Road in Beavercreek. The approximately 1,600 foot spur will end at Research Blvd which is  SR-825. The exact route of the trail has not been determined and the planned completion date is 2010.

  3. Kettering Multi-Use Path - This is the extension of the Iron Horse Trail North from the City of Kettering's border with Centerville North through Delco Park to State Farm Park. The City of Centerville is building the trail North from Iron Horse Park to the city border with Kettering. The Iron Horse Trail from State Farm Park North to the Creekside Recreation Trail is complete.

  4. Dryden Road Multi-Modal Path(Nominal Name)  The current plan is to build this trail North  from Main Street (Formerly Old Sellars Road) in Moraine to Northlawn Avenue a distance of approximately 1.5 miles. Completion of this trail section is planned for the year 2011. Long range plans are to connect the City of Moraine to the Great Miami River Recreation Trail that runs along the city's West boundary in several places.

  5. Xenia-Jamestown Connector Bikeway - The Xenia-Jamestown Connector current exists from Jamestown West to Jasper Road. These funds will build a 400' tunnel under US-35 and extend the trail from Jasper Road. The route will be in a southwest direction that curves west and eventually northwest along Home Avenue to reach Xenia Station.

  6. Bellbrook-Spring Valley Connector - This trail spur will connect the city of Bellbrook at   Sackett-Wright Park East to the Little Miami Scenic Trail at Spring Valley. A Feasibility Study was awarded in Spring 2006 to plan the trail and the results were shown at an informational meeting in Bellbrook 10 September 2008. The route which is not finalized will run alongside SR-725.

  7. Yellow Springs Bike Connector -  This connector will make access to the Little Miami Scenic Trail easier from Yellow Springs.

  8. Miami Valley Recreation Trails/Regional Signage Proposal - These funds will be utilized to implement uniform informational signage along many of the trails in Miami, Montgomery and Greene counties. These signs will not replace existing signs, but will supplement them and provide consistent trail information, to make the trail system easier to navigate. The Miami Conservancy District is leading the effort and has eight other participating partner jurisdictions including: City of Centerville, Washington Twp. (in Montgomery County), Centerville-Washington Twp. Park District, Five Rivers Metro Parks, Greene County Parks, Miami County Park District, City of Tipp City and City of Piqua. The new signs will first appear in 2007.

  9. Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County)  [GMRRT] -Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Montgomery & Miami Counties) (GMRRT) This trail will start at Old Springfield Rd. in northern Montgomery County and run northward through Miami County to the Shelby County Line. Along the way are seven numbered sections and three cities: Tipp City, Troy and Piqua so together there are 10 separate trail project sections.  This construction is for:

    1. Section 3 - Tipp City North to the existing 1.6 mile trail in Concord Township at Dye Mill Road and County Road 25A.

    2. Section 4 - From Tipp City's Kyle Park the trail will run south down Canal Road through Monroe Township and Montgomery County to Old Springfield Road & connect with the completed Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Northern Segment) in Montgomery County. This section will be bid in July 2009 with construction starting in 2009 and ending in 2010.

  10. Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County) Section 5 -   This 1.30 mile section of the Great Miami River Recreational Trail  will run from Peterson Road South through Twin Arches Park at Eldean Road to Duke Park (Troy). This trail segment will connect to Section 6 (see below) to the South.

    1. Section 5- This is called Section 5 of the trail. See the trail page for more detail.

  11. Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County) Section 6 - Trail construction from Peterson Road North to Lock 9 Park in Piqua. [Under construction 2008-2009]

  12. GMRRT Troy Bikeway Connector -  Construction of a new section of tail to replace the existing trail on the sidewalk atop the levee. Trail will be constructed in the flood plain of the Great Miami River.  [Completed Fall 2007].

    1. City of Troy Section 9 - Read more about it on its trail page.

  13. Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County) Tipp City -  Canal Lock Park to Kyle Park .4 miles
     [Complete Fall  2008]

  14. Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Montgomery County)

    1. The trail has been known as the Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Northern Segment) for some years. This construction will complete the connection between the trail in Taylorsville MetroPark to the trail in downtown Dayton at Triangle Park.  [Complete July 2008]

  15. Mad River Recreation Trail (Extension) - Construct trail from Eastwood MetroPark to Huffman MetroPark connecting to the T-Connector and Wright Brothers Bikeway.  This trail will go down Springfield Street in Riverside and connect to Eastwood MetroPark where it will meet  the  Mad River Recreation Trail .

  16. Wolf Creek Recreation Trail - This construction will close most of the gap between the trail in downtown Dayton called the Paul Lawrence Dunbar Connector from the Great Miami River to Wesleyan MetroPark with the main section of the trail called the Wolf Creek Recreation Trail that runs Northwest from the City of Trotwood, through Brookville to end at Verona.

  17. RiverScape Phase 3 - Five Rivers MetroParks is planning to build a bicycle hub in downtown Dayton at the RiverScape location at Monument and Riverside Drives.

  18. I-675 Pedestrian Bridge Project - This bridge will connect Beavercreek at the Fairfield Commons Mall across I-675 to Colonel Glenn Hwy and Wright State University. (more)  See the webpage on I-675 Pedestrian/Cyclist Bridge

  19. Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County) Section 5 -   Peterson Road South through Twin Arches Park at Eldean Road to Duke Park (Troy)  [Complete October 2009]
    . See Section 5 webpage.

  20. Section 6 Great Miami River Recreational Trail Monroe/Concord Twp. North Leg - Construct  a bikeway & pedestrian bridge crossing over the Great Miami River South of Peterson Road just North of the intersection of County Road 25A and I-75. This will connect Section 5 (see #19 above) to Piqua.   See trails in Miami County Section 6.

  21. Austin Pike Remodeling This first construction project to move Austin Pike North of the airport will also add a one mile bicycle trail in 2012. Eventually the plan is to run a trail route through Southern Montgomery County from Crains Run Nature Park at the Great Miami River Recreation Trail East along Austin Pike and the Social Row Road to connect to the Little Miami Scenic Trail at Spring Valley or Waynesville.

  5. Bethel Township Study - This 100% CMAQ funded project would prepare a study for future trails development in Bethel Township.

  6. Little Miami Scenic Trail - As the trail comes into downtown Springfield, it currently goes under a railroad bridge. The project would add lighting in the tunnel under the bridge.
