Temporary Route on Rural Roads

Ohio To Indiana Trail- The trail from Urbana in Champaign County, through Piqua in Miami County and Greenville in Darke County ending at the Union City Gateway is called collectively the Ohio To Indiana Trail.   For some time to come much of the trail will consist of marked trails on rural highways in the three counties.

Route: I drove this route in November 2010. It starts at the West end of Piqua's P.A.T.H. Trail at Spiker Road. The trail follows rural roads (see below) before it gets to Covington and Bradford.

Piqua to Covington Section - This section already is marked on rural roads that are low traffic and safer for cyclists. Click Here or on the photo at right to get the 2.60 Mb (.pdf) map of the rural trails from the end of the Piqua Activities Trail for Health through Covington and continuing to the "Bradford Loop". I'll have pictures of this trail section soon. The trail ends on Covington-Bradford Road (County Highway 88) and on Covington-Gettysburg Road (County Highway 81)  and they continue into Bradford. Click Here to see a Google Map of the area showing both roads connecting West to Bradford.

Covington to Versailles Section  - This section of the trail will be marked on rural roads for the time being. Later a formal trail will be built in this section. See Piqua to Covington Section . A suitable route on less-traveled rural roads is being developed. Once the route is developed I'll have a map here or a turn by turn description of the route for your use.

In this table I have available for your use turn-by-turn road routes on rural roads from Covington to Versailles and from Versailles to Greenville. The images are small representations of the maps. You can get a large Adobe file of the map by clicking on the link below.
A Word of Caution : These road trail are on narrow rural roads with no shoulder. Some of the farm traffic is high speed. These routes are NOT for Grandma and the kids, but should be ridden by those comfortable sharing a narrow road with traffic.
At right is the map on rural roads from Covington to Versailles. It is planned to have a formal trail sometime in the future, but this is what we have currently.  Click the photo to see a larger image or click on the link below to get a Adobe file of the route.

Covington to Bradford Section - This section is on rural roads as well for some time to come.

This photo shows the entrance and parking lot of  the Greenville Falls State Scenic River Area. It is just West of the jog in the Covington-Gettysburg Road after it crosses Range Line Road. The viewing area is a few hundred feet from the viewing area along a gravel walkway.

The Falls was one of the first hydroelectric generating plants in the United States; "Falls Electric Company" in 1897.

Here is the viewing platform to see the river and Falls at the end of the walkway. You can see the foundations of the dam and the upstream Rapids from this lookout. It's a pleasant view on a sunny day.
Here is a view downstream from the viewing platform shown above. you can see at the right side of river the remains of a turbine tower that drove a generator to produce electric power. Just beyond the old dam is the bridge that Range Line road uses to cross the Greenville Creek.

There is parking and other scenic views available from Range Line Road on the other side of the Scenic River Area.
