Trail Description   The Troy section of the trail starts at the Troy Water Works South of town, follows the East bank of the Great Miami River crossing under Market Street and Adams Street to Duke Park where the trail now ends. The trail also continues from the West Bank of the river at Treasure Island (cross the Adams Street Bridge) and continues to Lytle Road North of Troy.

The trail is approximately 10 miles long from Lytle Road North of Troy, South through Troy to Dye Mill Road Section , Dye Mill Road to Tipp City Trail Section  and the  Tipp City Trail Section . The current trail ends at Kyle Park South of Tipp City.

Surface Old and new, paved with asphalt 8' wide, and some side walks.

Construction PlansWhen the Adams Street bridge is replaced in 2011 there will be a bicycle lane on it, to replace the sidewalk used as the method of getting to the existing trail on the West bank of the Great Miami River to Lytle Road. Current plans are to build a bicycle bridge across the river from Duke Park to Midway Island and from there to Treasure Island.

Route

Hotels, Motels, B&Bs & Campgrounds near the Trail  - Each trail has it's own accommodations near the trail. Click on the link to be taken to the Accommodations in the Miami Valley RailTrails Area

Park and Ride Locations - At Miami Shore Golf Course and the parks next to the trail in downtown Troy including Community Park. Also at Treasure Island on the West Bank of the River. At the North end of the trail on the East bank of the River in Paul K. Duke Park.

Restrooms  - In the parks near the trail including Community Park and Paul K. Duke Park.

Impressions  When I reviewed this trail and took pictures the trail looked like it needed some maintenance. Also some of the trail is on narrow sidewalks that should be widened.

Trail Plans -  The City of Troy is going to extend the trail North from Paul K. Duke Park. They also plan to build a bridge from the levee across the river to Treasure Island. That will connect the trail on the East bank with the existing "Troy Trail" that extends North on the West bank to Lytle Road. Plans also include a bridge from Duke Park to Midway Island and the trail on the East bank of the Great Miami River.  A part of the plan is to transform the old boathouse on Treasure Island into a bicycle depot.  At right  is a poster of the planned, renovated, Marina Building.

Trail Review  - Below are the new photographs and trail descriptions of the trail as it appeared in Summer 2008. This is the
combined trail that runs North into downtown Troy from the Troy to Dye Mill Road Section From the Adams Street  Bridge
the trail splits into two trail segments.

Combined Trail - These pictures show the trail South of downtown Troy. This trail starts at the Northern end of  Troy to Dye Mill Road Section of the Great Miami River Trail, and runs through downtown Troy. At Adams Street the trail continues North on the East bank of the River to Paul K. Duke Park. The trail also runs West across the Adams Street Bridge, turns North and ends at Lytle Road North of downtown Troy.

Photos on this page are shown South to North

This picture is the last picture used on the Troy to Dye Mill Road Section Trail webpage. This section of trail ends by the Troy Water Plant near the entrance to the Miami Shores Golf Club (entrance on E SR-41). The City of Troy's Trail starts here.
This picture was taken from the B&O railroad bridge West. You can see the Courthouse in the background and the Market Street Bridge (State Route 55) over the river.

View from the vicinity of the B&O railroad bridge, looking across the river at the Troy Low Head Dam which is East (downstream) from the Market Street Bridge.
. The bicycle trail goes under the Market Street Bridge in downtown Troy (behind us) and follows the levee. Here we can see back ( East)  towards the B&O bridge where the trail drops down from the levee to pass beneath the Market Street Bridge.

At the Market Street Bridge looking Northwest along the bank of the Great Miami River. This sidewalk trail was built some time ago. As you can see the trail goes up to the sidewalk on the levee (right in picture) and down to the river level on the newer darker asphalt (left in picture). In Summer this is the location of the  City of Troy 's famous Strawberry Festival
Here we are looking back to the Market Street Bridge. We are on the top of the levee. Why I put this photo in is that there is a water fountain about six feet behind me. You may want to come up the ramp (lighter asphalt) you see in the previous picture to get your drink. We are showing here the other end of the ramp takes you atop the levee.

If you continue on the sidewalk on the levee between Market and Adams Street, you will see the Troy High School Stadium( at right), as well as Hobart Arena (an indoor ice skating rink) and the new Troy Aquatic Park .
As we follow the trail at the river level alongside the Great Miami River we go past (on your right East)  the area where the city holds is famous Troy Strawberry Festival. Just across the river is the handsome County Court House building shown here.

As the trail continues downtown it goes under the Adams Street Bridge shown ahead. Just like the Market Street Bridge behind us, you can continue on the trail under the bridge or take the ramp up to Adams Street.

End of Combined Trail

North to Paul K. Duke Park - This is the trail segment North on the East Bank of the Great Miami River to Paul K. Duke Park. Please see Yahoo Maps for a picture of downtown Troy that shows where the trail is.

Here I have taken the picture you can see from the link to Yahoo Maps (above) and annotated it for your use. I use a dashed red line to show the trail starting before the Adams Street Bridge, continuing under Adams Street, following the levee to Riverside Drive. The trail runs North on the sidewalk and then crosses Riverside Drive again to reach Paul K. Duke Park.
Here we are looking back down the trail to the Adams Street Bridge you can see in the background. We are looking down on the trail from the 20' (or higher) levee built to protect the City of Troy from flooding on the Great Miami River.

This photo was taken at the same location as the one above. We are looking across the Great Miami River at Treasure Island. This city park is planned to be used for a bicycle staging area and boat house in the future. See: Trail Plans  (above on this page)
This photo was also taken in the same spot. We are continuing North along the East Bank of the Great Miami River. This picture was also taken from atop the levee. Community Park is on the other side of the levee. A mother and her child are taking a walk on the trail.

The trail continues North alongside the 20' (or higher) levee. As the levee turns to the East the trail follows it. Here we are looking back toward the river (West). If we were to continue back towards the river we would see the trail curve back towards the Adams Street Bridge.

We are at the same location as the above picture. We have turned around and are facing East. Ahead of us the trail crosses Riverside Drive and then follows it on a sidewalk to the North. That building in the background is part of the Riverside Cemetery.

In this photo we are looking North alongside Riverside Drive. The sidewalk is the trail. Riverside Drive is at left in the photo and Riverside Cemetery is at the right. We will follow the sidewalk for about .5 mile.

We have come to the second crossing of Riverside Drive. The sidewalk ends here and we will be crossing back to the West side of Riverside Drive to get to Paul K. Duke Park.

This photo shows the trail curving around to the North. In the far background is Paul K. Duke Park. Behind us is a small parking lot and Riverside Drive which we have just crossed.
This is the main entrance to Paul K. Duke Park. It is about 1 mile North of the previous location on Riverside Drive. You might want to start your ride here. There is plenty of parking, as well as water and inside restrooms at the park.

I am told there are also mountain biking trails in the park close to the River.

End of trail in Troy on East Bank of the Great Miami River

West Across Adams St. Bridge & N. to Lytle Rd - This is the trail that crosses the Adams Street Bridge and then continues North through downtown Troy to end at Lytle Road on the West Bank of the River. Please see the Yahoo Map here so see where the trail goes.

In the image at left the dotted red line shows the trail crossing the Adams Street Bridge, following the levee North to Treasure Island and then crossing North Elm Street to run alongside a small creek that parallels Atlantic Street. Then the trail crosses North Ridge Road in front of the Hobart Ground Power building. The trail then starts North and ends in several miles at Lytle Road.
In order to get to the trail cross the Adams Street bridge and then turn (right) along the levee. Continue on the levee until you get to Treasure Island.

We are now at Treasure Island Park on North Elm Street looking across the street from the park entrance. The trail crosses Elm Street and continues along the levee which follows Atlantic Street to the West.

I've had lunch there and I can recommend it to you. It features old fashioned food
Here we are standing on the levee at Harrison Street, one block West from North Elm Street which you can see in the background. The trail is following the levee towards Treasure Island.  We see in the distance the back of the building in the above picture. We are looking to the East.

We are still at Harrison Street looking West, away from Treasure Island. You can see houses in the distance. They are on North Ridge Avenue. The trail continues to follow the levee and crosses North Ridge Ave. at  the Hobart Ground Power building.
At North Ridge Road just South of the Hobart Ground Power building. The sign on the side of the building says Hobart Brothers Filler Metals Division the building's previous use. The trail crosses Ridge Ave. here and follows Trade Road East in front of the building. You can see the trail across the street on the left center of the photo.

The trail runs alongside the Hobart Plant on Trade Road, crosses Trade Square East and then turns to the North (right) on Trade Square West.  The trail continues North on Trade Square West until it gets to Fleet Road where it jogs (turns right) back to Trade Square East (turn left) and continues North.
The trail follows Trade Square East (North) to the corner of Trade Square East with Surrey Road where it  turns right and goes behind Hook Elementary School.

Here we are beyond the curve that takes us behind Hook School Elementary. The fence is the properly line of the school. We are looking South, back the way we came. If we could see beyond the field ahead we could see the back of the Hobart building.
In this photo we have turned around and are looking North. You can see the Hook Elementary School fence and playground equipment at the left of the photo.

We have gone beyond Hook School in this photo and the trail is following a tree line behind some apartment houses at the left of the photo. We are facing North.
We are almost to the end of the trail looking North. The sign says; "This hydraulic race was one of the tributaries that fed water to the Historic Miami-Erie Canal." The tree line next to the trail (right in picture) is the race.

This is Trail's end on Lytle Road. Our car is at left and you can see the apartment buildings at right that border the trail. Hook School is about 1 mile South of here.

The trail planners hope to run the trail from Lytle Road to Section 5 of the Trail that will take it to North to Peterson Road.  See the Map of Miami County trails.
