Detour around US-35

Trail Construction News!

Update December 2010  - As of 24 November, the first course of asphalt was completed on the trial construction from Washington Street (one block South of Xenia Station) along US-68 (Home Avenue) to its intersection with US-35. The finish coat is complete to S. Columbus Street. The trail which will be about 3 miles long will not be completed until April or May 2011. When this work is accomplished the 400 foot tunnel under US-35 will still need to be built and is scheduled for 2013. The Detour - The detour is leave the trail at S. Columbus Street (see below) and follow US-68 (Home Avenue South) You'll cross over US-35 in about one mile. Turn left (East) on Hook Road and continue about 1.25 miles down Hook Road and turn left (North) onto South Bickett Road. Take Bickett about .3 miles North to the end of the trail and continue East to Jamestown and the Fayette County line.

These are new pictures and descriptions taken of the construction on 12/14/2010 by one of  Tom's Spies;  J.D. Mackiewicz. You can see all of his photos and descriptions by Clicking Here (Be sure to click on the picture of J.D. to see more pictures of the trail.

I know that these pictures were taken on a snowy day in December 2010. As the work progresses in the Spring of 2011, we will get new photos to replace these. Thank you for your understanding.

At right is a Bing.com image that I have copied to show you the beginning of the trail at Washington Street across US-68 (South Detroit Street) from Xenia Station. Click Here to be taken to the Bing.com page so that you can manipulate the map yourself.

This is where the trail crosses Detroit Street. Go straight, but slightly to the right down Home Street (US 68). This is an awkward intersection. We are .10 mile from Xenia Station.
Turn left down Washington St. We are .14 mile from Xenia Station.

This is where the dedicated Xenia-Jamestown trail starts. Turn right off of Washington St. We are .27 miles from Xenia Station. From there the trail is uphill and winds slightly on the old rail road bed. You will notice old telegraph poles complete with wire.
Typical view on the trail. This trail is well wooded, which will make for wonderful shade in the summer and a nice wind break.

I have no information about what this building is. J.D. didn't have anything either. Perhaps, one of Tom's Spies can fill us in on what this is.
The trail opens up a little after crossing Monroe St. You will notice US 68 on your right. We are .6 mile from Xenia Station

Here we are riding under Patton St. 1.2 mile from Xenia Station. Patton street is the entrance to the Xenia Industrial Park and the old railroad went under the railroad bridge at Patton which is being re-used for the trail.
This is the current trail's end. You are seeing US-35 in the distance. There is a plan (2013) to build a tunnel under US-35. The trail does pick up on the other side. We are 1.5 miles from Xenia Station. (I was tempted to climb the hill and jay walk across the freeway, but I thought better of it and used the roads to get to the other side)

On the other side of US-35 look toward Xenia. We would be 1.6 miles from Xenia Station if the tunnel was finished.
We have just crossed Bickett Road. We would be 2.6 miles from Xenia Station if the tunnel was finished.

Update September 2010 -  The City of Xenia expects to award contract for the trial in September 2010 and construction should get started soon thereafter. The trail will be built Southeast from Xenia Station just East of Home Road, Ohio-68, to its intersection with US-35. There will be a detour to get to the existing trail Southeast of US-35 that runs from there to the Fayette County line.

Remaining Construction  Three unused bridges were constructed during Phase 1. They take the trail Northwest from Hoop Road to US-35 (two bridges) and next  to Home Road (one bridge). The remaining trail construction to get to Xenia Station divide into three phases that will be completed in 2011. They are:

  1. Bore a 400 foot tunnel under US 35 to get the trail to the other side of the road (Estimated date of completion 2013)
  2. Pave from Hoop Road West to Washington Street (under construction in 2010 ) and
  3. Pave from Washington Street to Hill Street in Xenia (under construction 2010) .  This trail section will be 3.7 miles long. (Estimated completion Summer 2011)
  4. See: Approved Projects page for more information on funding for this project

 Surface: Paved. Asphalt 10' wide

Route: Southeast from Xenia Station to Jamestown and then on to Washington Court House. (See map). To reach the trail now (until 2013 when the trail is completed to Xenia Station); take the Prairie Grass Trail (AKA Ohio to Erie Trail) East from Xenia Station to Jasper Road. Turn right onto Jasper Road (Southeast). Continue riding on Jasper Road until you go under the US-35 bridge over Jasper Road (about one mile). The trail crosses Jasper Road about one more mile down Jasper Road.

Map: I have a  large map that will help you.  Click Here for a printable map. Here is a 2008 map that shows the connectivity to the Fayette County line.  Here is a Bikely Map that my friend J.D. Mackiewicz provided for your use.

Hotels, Motels, B&Bs & Campgrounds near the Trail  - Each trail has it's own accommodations near the trail. Click on the link to be taken to the Accommodations in the Miami Valley RailTrails Area

Park and Ride Locations: Xenia Station has parking, water, and rest rooms as does Frank Seaman Park in Jamestown. There is a small parking lot at the trail's end on Rosemoor Road. See Google Maps  for the location. Note: The bicycle trail is marked in green.

Rest Rooms: Frank Seaman Park in Jamestown has rest rooms parking and water. When the trail is completed to Xenia you can use Xenia Station as a staging area.

Impressions:  The 7.7 mile Phase 1 trail section from Jamestown West to Hoop Road is a scenic, mostly flat and shaded trail that is fun to ride. The trail is very rural so what you'll see is a lot of farms. The 4.3 miles of Phase 2 construction East to the Fayette County line is more shaded than I expected and is complete (Summer 2008).

Trail Review:
The trail is complete from the Hoop Road (Southeast of Xenia) East to Jamestown (US-72) and to the Fayette County Line a total of 12.0  miles. The trail review and pictures are below.

Future Plans:

Summer 2008 Trail Compete from Fayette County Line to Hoop Road (Southeast of Xenia Station) The pictures below are shown from the trail's end at the Fayette County line, West to Jamestown and to the trail's other end at Hoop Road.

Here is a photo of the trail's Eastern end about one quarter mile East of Rosemoor Road. This sign is 5.4 miles from Seaman Park and 4.5 miles from the beginning of the new trail at OH-72. We will turn around and ride back to Jamestown.

These are mostly narrow farm roads but some of the locals seem to think that they are on a freeway; i.e. they drive fast. Please look both ways before you cross. We are 2 miles from the trail's end.
This is the Heifner Road crossing of the trail. When I rode this trail, I was surprised by the amount of shade on the trail. . On both sides of the trail were prosperous looking farms with large fields of corn and soybeans We are 3.23 miles from the trail's end.

Here we have come to the end of the formal trail. We are at Sycamore Street. On our left is a large cemetery. We will turn right onto Sycamore and then left in 50' to Verity Street. The trail follows Verity Road for about 200 yards until it gets to the original trail across OH-72. In the right background of this photo you can see a two story old brick house. The trail goes by it and then joins the old trail.
I

f you continue riding North on Sycamore Street for 2 blocks you'll come to E. Washington Street. Turn left and go 1.5 blocks. On your right you'll see the local restaurant who has, I'm told, great pie.

About one half mile from the trail start is this little wooden bridge to right. It connects to the parking lot of:
Jordon's SuperValu Grocery
96 West Washington Street
Jamestown, Ohio 45335
(937) 675-4161
You can buy food and beverages and use their restrooms.
A little bit farther down the trail is what looks like a street off to the right of the trail. Frank rode down the 100 yard "street" and reported a McDonalds at the end of it.

We are at the South New Jasper Station Road crossing at 4.2 miles from start.  I am told that this was some sort of Railroad Station at one time presumably the new Jasper Station.
We are arrived at the largest bridge on the trail. The developers used the original foundations for the steel span bridge over the North Folk of Caesar's Creek.  My riding buddy Frank is looking at some of the  foot long carp we saw in the Creek (or maybe he is throwing up).

We have reached the Jasper Road crossing at 7.7 miles.  As you can see the railbed continues across the road . The trail now terminates at East Hoop Road . The trail will need to be built across S. Bickett Road before reaching US-35. There are two completed bridges ( #2 and #3) between Bickett Road and US-35.
To continue the trail a 400' tunnel will be built under US-35 and the road will be built on the East side of Home Road (US-68).

Xenia-Jamestown Trail Grows - In 2008 the trail was expanded. The City of Xenia paved the trail from Jasper Road to Hoop Road about .5 mile. So now the trail starts at Hoop Road. (see below for new photos and descriptions)

The current end of the trail is on Hoop Road. If you click on the photo at right, it will show you a annotated map which has Jasper Road (top of picture), the trail marked in red, and the location of the DP&L building which is next to the end of the trail on Hoop Road.

To get to the trail's end take Jasper Road Southeast to South Bickett Road. Turn right onto Bickett. Drive 1 mile to Hoop Road. Turn left and go 1.1 miles down Hoop Road. If you pass the DP&L building you've gone too far.

I am providing this picture to you because we went right by the trail without seeing it. It is not marked in any way. This photo is facing Northwest on Hoop Road. I am standing in the DP&L building's parking lot. Why I took this is that the high voltage lines are just above the new trail section.
In this photo I have walked down the road from the DP&L building where I left the car. We are looking Northeast from Hoop Road at the new 1/2 mile trail segment.

James32.jpg (51022 bytes)

James33.jpg (53374 bytes)

I have turned around in this picture. I am at the same location except we are now looking Southwest across the street from the new trail segment. This is the old railbed that will become the new trail when it is extended to Xenia Station in 2011.
The new trail segment was not built in accordance with the engineering standards for bicycle trails. For example, it is only 8 feet wide not 10' that the standard calls for. It is also overgrown, unkempt and not being maintained at all. I was told that this 1/2 mile section would be rebuilt in 2009. However the current economy probably did not allow for this right now.

James34.jpg (76121 bytes)

James35.jpg (45271 bytes)

In this photo we have driven Hoop Road to S. Bickett Road to Jasper Road and turned right on Jasper Road. The trail crossing at Jasper Road is about one mile from S. Bickett Road.

Here we are looking Southwest across Jasper Road to the new 1/2 mile trail segment that now ends at Hoop Road.

This is just a picture I took to show you how nice the trail looks on the sunny Summer's day. The trail has patches of sun and then some shade..

At left is new Bridge #1. It is at Home Road and South Columbus Street in Xenia. From here the trail will continue Southwest  towards Xenia Station.
Our journey ends at Xenia Station. This is the B&O Caboose at the edge of the Station property at South Detroit Street. The 4.5 miles of trail from Xenia Station to Hoop Road will be built by the City of Xenia in 2011. However, as noted above, all of the bridges are complete.
