Newsletter July 2011 - I am
discontinuing newsletters and most maintenance of this website due to the
increased severity of my illness.
Newsletter June 2011 - No
newsletter this month. I have become ill, diagnosed October 2010, and the
fatigue from one of the treatments makes it impossible to write a newsletter
this month.
Newsletter May 2011 - We start
with proposed construction on the Creekside Trail in Beavercreek. Both the Buck
Creek Trail and the Great Miami River Recreation Trail in Middletown have breaks
due to flooding. We have some news on trail construction in Miami County. The
new Miami Valley Trails Map is available and you should watch out for Yellow
Bikes in Dayton! Bike to Work Day is May 20th. as well as the Cycling
Summit. GOBA will be in London this year and FMCPT is looking for help. This
month the Webpage Of The Month is the Ohio to Indiana Trail page.
Newsletter April 2011- News
this month start with the trails are re-opening in Clark County as well as
the Ohio River Trail will have a Ribbon Cutting 28 April 2011. In Cincinnati,
meetings have been held to develop the Oasis Corridor , which will be
used to carry part of the Ohio River Trail to downtown Cincinnati. The Buck
Creek Trail closed due to construction and last month a 30 foot sinkhole closed
the Great Miami River Trail near Middletown. I have updated my Ohio River Trail
page. Shawn Richardson's Ohio Trail Numbering System documents are available on
the website for reading. There are several new events including all Summer's Bike
With A Ranger. Friends of the Little Miami Scenic Park are holding a fund
raiser pancake breakfast on 16 April. And you may want to attend the Miami
Valley Cycling Summit sponsored by Five Rivers MetroParks on 20 May
2011.
Newsletter March 2011-
Hamilton County had an Open House on extension of Little Miami Scenic Trail 1
March, 2011. I have some news on trail planning in Clinton and Pickaway
counties. I updated my Alphabetical Trails in Ohio list and Trails by County
with Maps to show the planned Clinton and Pickaway trails. I have a new map for
the Little Miami Scenic Trail thanks to reader Lonnie Burger. MVRPC will soon
have for your use the 2011 version of the Miami Valley Trails Map. I will be
providing information about Shawn Richardson's new Bike Route Numbering
System For Ohio's Bike Trails soon. I have some announcements for new
upcoming bicycling events you'll want to see and this month's webpage is the
Interactive Maps Page.
Newsletter February 2011 - Clark
County Commissioners voted to re-open the trails 1April, 2011, new information
on the Mad River Recreation Trail Extension, as well as a possible new route for
the Prairie Grass Trail through downtown London. South of Dayton there is
construction in planning from Middletown to Franklin and from Hamilton to the Rentschler Preserve.
OKI has a new status report on their trails in Cincinnati you can download. I've
changed all of the route numbers on the trails affected by the Ohio To Erie
Trail being granted "Ohio Route #1". I've started to add new webpages
to the Great Miami River Recreation Trail in Miami County and have asked the
park's departments if they would mark mileage on the trail North or South of
RiverScape the zero mileage point just like Xenia Station is the zero mileage
point for the Little Miami Scenic Trail. I have asked the park's departments to
comment on the implications of HR727 (which allows some electric bicycles on the
trails) and a Department of Justice ruling about handicapped users of the
trails. Because of the route number changes my Webpage of the Month is again About Multi-Use Trail Names and Route Numbers.
Newsletter January 2011 -
This month I tell you about trail construction in Miami County. Also I give the
current status of the Ohio To Indiana Trail. Then I discuss the trail closures
in Clark County caused by the failed Parks Levy. A bridge was completed in
downtown Dayton over the Wolf Creek Recreation Trail and I had hoped that the
trail would open this year, but the City of Dayton has already started
construction of another bridge over the Creek in downtown Dayton closing the
trail for another year. In 2011 a number of trail route numbers will change to accommodate
the Ohio to Erie Trail's desire to be named "Ohio Route Number 1". I
added new photos of the Xenia-Jamestown Connector to the webpage as well as
updated my History and Miami Valley Trail page with the addition of another 3.7
miles of trail to the system. I've updated the Mad River Recreation Trail page
showing more about the new construction this year and I updated my Statistics
Page with data from 2010. Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) was
able to adopt a Complete Streets Policy which will be of great use to cyclists
and walkers. Because of the trail name changes January's Webpage of the Month is
"About Multi-Use Trail Names and Route Numbers" which explains the
trail numbering system.
Newsletter December 2010
- The news this month includes new construction on the Xenia-Jamestown
Connector as well as construction planning in Covington (Miami County). Madison
County has a new trail spur at Keny Blvd. Outside the Miami Valley both Marion
County and Delaware are working on their trails. One trail that runs North from
Columbus through both counties will be on the old Columbus, Delaware and
Marion Interurban that went broke in 1933. I've added a new webpage for the
Prairie Grass Trail (AKA Ohio To Erie Trail) East of Wilson Road which is also
called the Camp Chase RailTrail. I have a new map of the proposed Little Miami
Scenic Trail from the Little Miami Golf Center to Clear Creek Park and South
eventually ending at Lunken Airport. As is usual, I make a number of small
changes to pages during the month. You can find all of them on my What's
New? page. Last, and not least, this month's Webpage of the Month, is
dedicated to Glenn Oster's reviews of trails in the Miami Valley and
elsewhere.

Grass Trail. There are two new construction sites on the Ohio River Trail. I

and a Urbana to Piqua page to the website as a part of the new Ohio to Indiana
Trail. I have updated the Milford to Lunken Airport page to show you the new
progress and plans near Cincinnati. I'll be adding information to the Stillwater
River Recreation Trail pages when "Tom's Spies" report back. In
Breaking News Clark County Commissioners voted to close the bike trails in the
county. I'd like you to sign the Rails-To-Trails petition to AAA to get their
backing on trails. There are new maps of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati
available for download from OKI. Finally the Webpage of the Month is the new
Bradford to Gettysburg page.

is a change in trail route numbers, the new trailhead on the Prairie Grass Trail
East of London is almost complete, the Great Miami River Recreation Trail North
of Triangle Park has re-opened and the City of Riverside approved the final alignment
of the Mad River Recreation Trail Extension. I've updated my webpages to reflect
the previous as well as modifying greatly my Hotels, Motels, B&Bs and
Campgrounds page. I am asking readers to provide me with route information in
the gap between the two sections of the Stillwater River Recreation Trail.
Finally, the Trail of the Month Page is the Simon Kenton Trail.
Newsletter September 2010 -

webpage changes to show the updates. I've added pictures to several pages to
show you new developments; for example the new Prairie Grass Trail Trailhead
that FMCPT's is building. The Miami Valley Trails System is this month's Webpage
of the month.

able to update several webpages with new pictures of completed trails and I have
been able to remove some "Construction Detour" signs on trails for
downtown Dayton. I have added a new Ohio To Indiana Trails page to show the
continuing development of trails in Champaign, Miami and Darke County so this
month's trail page is the Ohio To Indiana Trail page.

The City of Dayton has changed some downtown streets to two way and added some
bike sharrows as well as being awarded a Bronze for becoming a "bicycle
friendly city." Both the Wolf Creek and Stewart Street Bikeways have
re-opened. Since the Google Maps bike trail information is so important I have
repeated it. And finally the Interactive Trails Maps are this months, webpage of
the month.
Newsletter

Clark, Miami, Montgomery, Hamilton and even Northern Kentucky. More about
MVRPC's December 2009 Miami Valley Trail User Survey Report as well as website
page changes. More information about the new Google Bicycle maps and news of
upcoming events.
Newsletter
March 2010 - This month I provide information about construction on local trails
including the Iron Horse Trail, Little Miami Scenic Trail and the Prairie Grass
Trail . I also give you and update about the Miami-2-Miami Trail and Ohio River Trail in
Hamilton County. Then I tell you about all of the webpages in the website that
have been updated materially including describing funding for six local trail
projects. In our Did You Know Department? I discuss the fact that the City of
Dayton has adopted a "Complete Streets" policy. Also I tell you about
Google Maps which now has bicycling information in it and I add some historical
information about the Prairie Grass Trail near London. I talk a bit about a
reader who wanted information about daily or multi-day rides in the Miami Valley
and I thank all my friends who attended my presentation at the Outdoor Summit
held on 6 March. Since I've talked a bit about trail funding in the
newsletter, this month's webpage is the Approved Multi-Use Trail Projects
page.
Newsletter

states for their trail building efforts and we came in eighth overall. I will
have a presentation at the Adventure Summit on Saturday 6 March, 2010 in the
Wright State University Student Union. And finally this month's Page of the
Month is my Trail Maps page.
