Ohio To Indiana Trail
Ohio State Route 36  (1)

About the Ohio To Indiana Trail - On this page I will provide information about the planned Ohio To Indiana Trail . The trail,  which when completed, will run West from Urbana  and St. Paris (Champaign County) through Fletcher, Piqua, and Covington (Miami County) to Bradford, Gettysburg,  Greenville and Union City (Darke County). It will connect at Union City Indiana with the Cardinal Greenways.

Trail Status Table (Below) - The table gives you the status of each section of the planned Ohio To Indiana Trail . As you can see, five sections of the trail are complete;  (See below). As each section is built, I will add a webpage for it. For example, I have information about the Urbana to Piqua Section  below.  I am providing it here for you to see. I have added a unique webpage for it so you can see the turn by turn instructions for the temporary on-road trail.

Piqua Activities Trail for Health (P.A.TH.) - existing 5.5 mile trail West from Troy-Sydney Road across the Great Miami River to Spiker Road

Piqua to Covington Section - This section already is marked on rural roads that are low traffic and safer for cyclists. Click Here or on the photo at right to get the 2.60 Mb (.pdf) map of the rural trails from the end of the Piqua Activities Trail for Health through Covington and continuing to the "Bradford Loop". I'll have pictures of this trail section soon. The trail ends on Covington-Bradford Road (County Highway 88) and on Covington-Gettysburg Road (County Highway 81)  and they continue into Bradford. Click Here to see a Google Map of the area showing both roads connecting West to Bradford.

At right are the logos being using to mark the rural streets from Piqua to Covington. You can see the two routes being marked. They are on Covington-Bradford Road and Covington-Gettysburg Road. We can thank Mr. Jay Wackler;  a member of the Miami County Trails Task Force, that is planning all of the trails in Miami County.

Covington to Versailles Section  - This section of the trail will be marked on rural roads for the time being. Later a formal trail will be built in this section. See New Webpage for this section:   Piqua to Covington Section . A suitable route on less-traveled rural roads is being developed. Once the route is developed I'll have a map here or a turn by turn description of the route for your use.

Covington to Bradford Section -  This section of the trail will be marked on rural roads for the time being. Later a formal trail will be built in this section. See Piqua to Covington Section (Below) A suitable route on less-traveled rural roads is being developed. Once the route is developed I'll have a map here or a turn by turn description of the route for your use.

Bradford to Gettysburg Section - (1.8 miles - Complete) -  The Darke County Park District is built (August 2010) the first 1.8 miles of trail that will start to connect the county to the Miami Valley Trails System, which is what I call the over 330 mile system of trails being built in Southwest Ohio, which we call the Miami Valley. It runs from Bridge Street in Gettysburg East to within 800' of the Bradford - New Harrison Road. The trail will be completed to Bradford-New Harrison Road early in 2011. See New Webpage for this section

In August 2010, Darke County Parks  released the following statement about their new trail called “The First Mile.”  It said the following:

" Darke County Parks is pleased to announce that “The First Mile” Clean Ohio Project has begun construction in the Gettysburg, Ohio area and will have almost two miles completed by the end of August. Park District Director /Secretary Roger M. Van Frank stated, “We are very excited to see the first phase of this multi year project get started. Once the community sees that actual construction has begun then the fun really begins as we watch this project energy grow over the next few years. We already have multi year commitments for donations from our local banking infrastructure to help support the in kind match needed to make this all happen.” Eventually Darke County Parks will hope to have over 18 miles of trail that will link Union City on the Ohio Indiana Border south to Greenville, Ohio where the Greenville Creek Trail (a previous Clean Ohio Project) will be linked up and then continue east to Bradford where Miami County Trail enthusiasts are working on connecting to Bradford from the Covington area. “This is a great example of what a regional group can accomplish with this “Can Do” attitude. The Friends of the Darke County Parks Phoenix Trails Committee are to be commended for their hard work and input to this project.” Van Frank Continued. A grand opening date and time for the first phase will be announced later in August. The trail pictures shown are during the construction phase and one of the pictures shows local resident Neil Garber already riding the trail and asking how far is this going to go? Upon completion it will be a 10 foot wide asphalt trail. For more information please contact Darke County Parks at 937-548-0165 or director@darkecountyparks.org " .

See New Webpage for Bradford to Gettysburg Section.

Gettysburg to Greenville Section Darke County Park District received a Clean Ohio Trails Grant in the amount $178K in August 2010. This money will continue the construction West of "The First Mile". The trail will be an additional 4.3 miles of which 1.6 miles will be new trail construction and remaining trail will be lane markings, signage and resurfacing of an existing bridge. The new section will start at North Bridge Street and run South to West Main Street. The trail will then follow West Main Street to its end. The trail will continue on Ohio 36 West to Mill Road and the trail will turn left (South). The trail will cross over the historic Old Mill Bridge over Scenic Greenville River. The trail will turn right onto Hahn Road (County Hwy 37) and continue to Spidel Road (Township Hwy165). It will  follow Spidel (using share the road markings ) to the crossing of the old railbed about 1/2 mile West. The old railbed runs Southwest. This trail section is planned to be built in 2011.

Greenville to Union City Section  - This section of trail will not be built for some time. However, the Darke County Parks District asked for a Clean Ohio Trail Grant  to buy the 11 miles of old railbed from Greenville Northwest to Union City. In August 2010 they received a grant of $220,000 to buy the railbed from the current owner Dayton Power and Light. Once they purchase the right-of-way in 2011, they can start requesting funds to accomplish the engineering of the trail and finally building this vital 11 miles link from Greenville to the Union City Gateway.  See Google Map  of the proposed trail. The dark line running North and West from Greenville to Union City is the old railbed that the  Darke County Park District  is going to purchase from DP&L.
