The River's Edge Trail
runs North and South from Lock 9 Park. This page is the
trail South to Peterson Road (3.0 mi) |
Here we are at the beginning of the trail both North and South from Lock 9 Park. On this webpage we will be following the River's Edge Trail South 3 miles to the trail's current end, Peterson Road. We are looking at Lock 9 Park. The front wheel of my bicycle is intruding into the picture. |
I have walked my bike about 30 yards South in Lock 9 Park. Here we are looking North from the park to the River's Edge (Northern Section). |
I took this photo from the same place as above. This is the old railroad bridge that spans the Great Miami River and carries the P.A.T.H. Trail East and West through Piqua. It connects with both River's Edge Trails here at Lock 9 Park. The view from the bridge is worth going up on it. |
Now we are looking due South. The large railroad bridge in the previous picture crosses above the trail. The trail goes downhill in front of us. The path to the right of the picture is the connection to the P.A.T.H. Trail. |
We went on the path spur to right and now we are looking West across N. Main Street. This is the P.A.T.H. As you can see there is ample parking across N. Main Street. |
In this photo I have turned around from the photo just above. We are looking at the end of the overhead railroad bridge that carries the P.A.T.H. East to Troy-Sidney Road. You get off your bicycle on the bridge and bring it down to street level using a "bicycle channel." Then you continue your ride. |
Here we are looking just a bit left of the previous picture. It shows the 20 yard or so pavement that will take us back to the River's Edge Trail (North and South). |
We have returned to the trail South and
are .21 miles South of Lock 9 Park (looking North). The bridge carries
East Main Street across the Great Miami River. The trail comes up to street level here at East Main Street and provides for access from the local neighborhood to the trail. When we rode by the trail in our car later, there was a family of six or eight adults and children, carrying chairs and fishing gear crossing the street here to get on the trail. |
This photo was taken from the same place as the above photo but is looking South towards the trail's end at Peterson Road. |
Here I stopped on the trail at .54 miles from Lock 9 Park to take a picture of the small parking lot in the left of the picture with the two trucks parked there. There is a boat launch at the end of the parking lot. There didn't seem to be any access for them so I took the photo. The white bridge in the background is the Garnsey Road Bridge. |
We are .75 miles from Lock 9 Park in this photo (Looking North). The trail goes uphill and crosses a dead end street here; Bridge Street. Since Bridge Street continues on the other bank of the river, I will assume there was a bridge here once. There is a sign at the dead end that says: "Piqua Boat & Ski Club." I assume the club can drive down the trail (carefully) to get to their boat launch and parking lot on the other side of the Garnsey Road Bridge. |
This photo was taken at same place as the one directly above but is looking South. The trail runs behind some businesses in this area. |
Here we are looking North again .89 miles from the beginning of the trail. We are at the North end of the Piqua Power Plant. There were several piles of telephone poles in a "supply yard." |
This photo was taken at the same location as the one directly above. What you see here is the Piqua Power Plant. The trail goes directly behind it alongside the West bank of the Great Miami River. |
This photo was taken right next to the Power Plant 1.03 miles from the trail's beginning. This is an old hydraulic dam that may have provided water power for some mills in the area. The control gates have been removed and the dam is only a derelict but I liked the image. You can see both this old dam and the "pipe bridge" in the first picture on this page above. Click Here to be taken there. |
We have gone by the Power Plant and are right next to a large white water tower. I am following a couple walking their bicycles onto the old bridge that carried steam pipes across the river from the old Nuclear Power Plant. The man on the bicycle told me that some businesses and schools on this bank of the river used steam to heat their buildings years ago. The trail developers cleverly used this old bridge to carry the trail over to the East bank of the Great Miami River. We are 1.07 miles along the trail. |
Here is a another picture of the "pipe bridge" looking East across the river. The couple ahead of me are walking their bikes across. I would advise you to walk your bicycle. The bridge is Very Narrow! The pipes were carried on the left side of the bridge. There is a nice view of the river from this bridge. |
We are now at the East end of the "pipe bridge." In order to get your bicycle off of it you need to put your bike's tires in the channel on the steps you see here. |
We are now off the "pipe bridge" and we are on the East Bank of the Great Miami River. This is the Southern extension of Bridge Street. The Atomic Power Plant and Sewer Works are ahead of us. |
When I rode by the Atomic Power Plant and Sewer Works I did not get a picture because I did not see the containment vessel for the reactor. Just before I entered the woods I turned around (looking North) and took this photo of both. We are 1.37 miles from the beginning of the trail. |
From the Atomic Power Plant the trail goes into thick woods and follows them for the rest of the trail. Here we see a cyclist coming at us. We are just entering the woods and since it was a hot day, the woods were most welcome. |
| We are 3.0 miles from Lock 9 Park and are at the trail's end about 40 yards from Peterson Road. You can see the road if you go out beyond the sign and look to the right. Since the trail was very muddy past the sign I did not continue. | |
| As you can see from this photo which is the last I took looking South, the end of the trail is a quagmire. | |
| I rode my bicycle back to
Lock 9 Park and we drove down County Route 25A South to Peterson Road
(SR-35A) . We
crossed the bridge over the Great Miami River and about 100 yards
from it saw where the trail would come out onto Peterson Road.
This photo is of a spring that comes across the trail from the East. That's probably why the trail is so wet here. When the trail is continued, some sort of culvert will have to be built to channel the water off the trail |
| This photo is looking West on Peterson Road towards the bridge over the river. Our car is at the far left of the picture next to a pickup truck. We suspect he was fishing in the Great Miami River. | |
| The Miami County Trails Task Force is working to continue the trail South from Peterson Road to Troy. The trail will cross Peterson Road to a parking lot. The trail will continue on the East bank of the River for about .5 mile and then will cross the Great Miami River on a dedicated bicycle bridge. Once the trail gets to the West bank of the River it will continue South to Twin Arches at Eldean Road. To see the entire schedule of events for all of the trail sections in Miami County please see the Great Miami River Recreation Trail In Miami County page.
