  About Bicycle Route Numbers 

 The Ohio Bike Route Numbering System

Bicycle Trail Names have a way of changing. In order to keep this website up to date I have had to periodically re-name some of my web pages. For example:

• The trails in downtown Dayton were first named for the benefactor whose idea caused the trails to be build. He was:
  Horace M. Huffman Jr. and the trail was originally named for him. 
  • The Trail was renamed the River Corridor Bikeway and remained that for some time.
  • Then the  trail was renamed the Great Miami Trail for several years. 
  • The trail has been renamed again to The Great Miami River Recreation Trail. 
  • It is called Route 25 throughout its length. 
  • Eventually it will extend through Butler, Montgomery and Miami Counties. 
    
• The trail that runs from downtown Dayton to Xenia was first named The H-Connector because on a map the shape of the trail was a letter "H".  This was before construction began.
  • The first trail segment to be built was the portion in Greene County from the new Xenia Station to the Greene County / Montgomery County Line. Greene County Parks and Recreation called their trail the Creekside Trail. 
  • When Montgomery County build their section from the county line to Eastwood MetroPark it was decided to call their portion the Creekside Trail as well. 
  • Recently all of the trails in Montgomery County have been renamed. Now the Creekside Trail is called the Creekside Recreation Trail.
  • Both Creekside Trails are Route 2. 
    
• North of downtown Dayton is Taylorsville MetroPark. The trail that was started there was called the Taylorsville Trail. 
  • Next it was renamed the North Miami Bikeway.
  • It has been renamed this year the Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Northern Segment).
  • It is part of Route 25 (see below). 
     
• The Kauffman Avenue Bikeway aka Huffman Prairie Overlook Trail has been renamed by the Fairborn Park and Recreation Advisory Board to become the Wright Brothers' Bikeway. This name change was approved by the Fairborn City Council, Apparently this name change has to do with in 2003) celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers First Flight in 1903. Remember the Wright Brothers were Dayton boys. It is Route 5. 
  
  
• Ohio To Erie Trail -  When finished the Ohio To Erie Trail will be over 350 miles long. It starts at the Ohio River near Cincinnati and runs North about 50 miles to Xenia Station in Greene County. Then it turns Northeast to connect to Cedarville, South Charleston (Clark County) and (June 2004) will reach London, Ohio.  It is called Route 1. 
  Greene County. In Greene County  the trail is called the Ohio To Erie Trail.
  Clark County   In Clark County the trail is called the Prairie Grass Trail.
  Madison County -  It is called the Prairie Grass Trail to London and the Roberts Pass Trail from Maple Street to Wilson Road.

   I could, and perhaps in the future will, add more trail names and their current (politically correct) name to this list. If you think you are confused about trail names think about the poor webmaster. I have to respond to each and every name change! I'm not sure of the motives of those who change trail names but I think it is a mistake. Each time a trail is renamed, the people who use the trail become more confused as to what trail are we talking about. I just wish it would stop. 

I have been working assiduously recently to change all of the old trail names to the politically correct new names. I will try to respond to all emails that use the old "wrong" name and the "new correct" name. But I will not like it!

About Bicycle Route Numbers       Here I will explain the bicycle route numbers in use in the Miami Valley. The route numbers are being used by the following counties; Champaign, Clark, Greene and Montgomery. The major trails with their associated route number are as follows:

 The Ohio Bike Route Numbering System is the brainchild of Shawn E. Richardson   PO Box 612, Worthington, Ohio 43085. You may know Mr. Richardson as the author of many best selling trail book including  Biking Ohio's RailTrails  - Adventure Publishing. You may also want to see his website Biking USARailTrails . He has proposed a sensible and workable solution to the problems with trail names outlined above. I highly recommend the State of Ohio to seriously consider and then adopt Mr. Richardson's plan.
