The following is an alphabetical  list of Rail and Towpath trails in Ohio. Rail-Trails are recreational trails that have been built on or along abandoned railroad lines. Some trails listed here are also constructed along the towpaths of abandoned canals. There are a few trails here that did not start as either railroad lines or towpaths but are included because they connect to RailTrails or towpaths.

This list was originally prepared by the Ohio Chapter of the Rails-To-Trails Conservancy. Steve Myers added some extra information that he knew of, or could determine from maps or other sources. "?" indicates unknown, "(?)" indicates speculation on Steve's or my part. Corrections or additions are welcomed.

EMERALD NECKLACE TRAIL

- Cleveland- Cuyahoga County (Partly open) This trail when completed will connect all 12 of the major parks in the Cleveland Ohio area. Currently 8 separate sections of the Necklace exist as follows:

1. Rocky River Reservation 13.5 miles in Lakewood,
2. Big Creek Parkway section 8 miles in Middlebury Heights,
3. Valley Pikeway 7.5 Miles in Strongsville,
4. A 4 mile section in Brecksville, which connects to the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail I
5. A section along Walton Hills to Bedford
6. 4.5 miles along Tinkers Creek and through the Walton Reservation

6. From Bedford to Salon a 6 miles section on the Hawthorn Parkway to the South Chagrin Reservation,
7. A 3.5 mile section from Salon to Bentleyville,
8. A 4 mile section from the North Chagrin Reservation to Chardon Road.

GREAT MIAMI RIVER RECREATION TRAIL [GMRRT] IN  WARREN & BUTLER COUNTIES (In Planning) This new trail will connect the River Corridor Trail in Montgomery County (Dayton) south along the Great Miami River through Warren and Butler counties to Hamilton where it will join an existing 3.6 mile trail.

GREAT MIAMI RIVER RECREATION TRAIL [GMRRT] (MIAMI COUNTY)

Miami County  (Section 2 - 2.5 miles complete) - connects to Troy, Ohio

GREAT MIAMI RIVER RECREATION TRAIL (Montgomery County)

At the park the "Creekside Recreation Trail runs East to connect with the Creekside Trail which starts at the Greene County line (Interstate I-675 at US-35).and County line (Interstate I-675 at US Route 35) and ends at the Xenia Station in Xenia, Ohio where it connects to four other trails.

- Runs parallel to the Middle Fork of the Little  Beaver Creek between Lisbon and Leetonia, Ohio.  
-Former Erie Lackawanna Railbed in Salem and Center Townships.

LITTLE MIAMI SCENIC TRAIL (completed)
-Springfield to Milford (outside Cincinnati)
 The Little Miami Scenic Trail runs some 76 miles from Springfield Ohio in the North to South of Milford (outside Cincinnati). Since it runs through several counties, there are several jurisdictions and names for the trail. From Xenia to Yellow Springs the trail is called locally the Yellow Springs Bikeway. From Xenia to Milford it's called the Little Miami Scenic Trail but since it runs through the Little Miami Scenic Park,  there is another link to the web site maintained for the park.

LITTLE MIAMI SCENIC STATE PARK (Trail through the park)
-50 Miles (South from Xenia) in four Ohio Counties; Greene, Warren, Clermont and Hamilton

This trail segment will be a part of the GMRRT. This 28 mile trail is being built from Crains Run Nature Park in Montgomery County South through Franklin in Warren County, Middletown in Butler County to finally end at an existing trail South of Hamilton also in Butler County.

OHIO CANAL WAY From Lake Erie in "The Flats" of Cleveland South to connect with the Ohio and Erie Towpath Trail. It will continue South of the Towpath Trail into Stark and Tuscarrawas counties. It will become a part of the "Ohio to Erie Trail" that starts in Cincinnati and will end in Lake Erie.

OHIO AND ERIE CANAL TOWPATH TRAIL
The trail which is a part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park  is along the old towpath of the Ohio and Erie Canal that once ran from Cleveland to the Ohio River.  You can take a "Virtual Tour" of the trail here.  Here is a set of Road Maps in the area for your use. OHIO TO ERIE TRAIL  
AKA as the Little Miami Scenic Trail to Xenia, Ohio and then
 Prairie Grass Trail  from Xenia to London on its way to Columbus  
-87 miles (Milford, near Cincinnati, to London)

-Clark, Montgomery, Warren & Hamilton Counties. In Greene County the trail is also Known As (AKA) the Prairie Grass Trail since it travels from the Xenia Station to London, Columbus and then North towards Cleveland
Building on already established trails such as the Little Miami Scenic Trail North of Cincinnati that runs currently from Milford to Springfield, and the Towpath Trail  (South of Cleveland) the sponsors of the trail anticipate that the Trail will be fully completed by 2003, which will coincide with the bicentennial of the State of Ohio.-The Ohio to Erie Trail is a part of the North Country Trail which winds through 5 Northwest U.S. States.

-Licking County/ E. Main Street and Morris Ave. to Hanover
-7 miles/asphalt paved
-Thomas J. Evans Foundation/Licking County Park District
-Adjacent to active Columbus and Ohio River Railway
-(Conrail, Pennsylvania) Former second track-
-Note: The Evans Foundation is also instrumental in the development of an extensive network of paved walking/bicycling trails between downtown Newark, the Newark Campus of the Ohio State University and along Raccoon Creek that will eventually link these two rails trails and others. Maps of the trail system are available at information stations along the trails.

PIQUA ACTIVITIES TRAIL FOR HEALTH (P.A.T.H.) 
- Miami County - (Finished) Fall 2003
- 5.5 miles East and West Trail runs from Troy-Sidney Road on the east side of town, to Spiker Road to the West. See Also the Canal Run and The River's Edge on what Piqua calls "The Loop" a 11.3 mile "loop" around Piqua 


PORTAGE BIKE AND HIKE TRAIL
- Summit, Portage and Cuyahoga counties/Kent to Sagamore Hills
- 23 miles/both asphalt paved and screened limestone sections
- Ohio Edison Company/Metro Parks Serving Summit County
- Akron, Bedford & Cleveland (interurban) and New York Central RR.


PRAIRIE GRASS TRAIL (AKA Ohio to Erie Trail)

Greene, Clark & Madison Counties
-9 miles from Xenia Station to Cedarville
-9.7 miles from Cedarville to South Charleston
-10.4 miles from South Charleston to London

-Richland County Park District
-CSX Transportation (Baltimore & Ohio)
-Opened in October 95, recognized as the 700th rail-trail in the
U.S. by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.

RIVERS EDGE SECTION of Piqua Linear Park
Miami County - Finished. Dedicated Oct. 2003
3.6 miles from Lock 9 Park in downtown Piqua to connect with the Canal Run at Roadside Park

SIMON KENTON TRAIL 
 
 - Clark and Champaign Counties, Ohio
 - 16.6 miles from Springfield to Urbana 
 - Phase 4  Completed from trail South to downtown Springfield . 16.6 miles (completed).
- This bikeway runs North from Springfield Ohio to Urbana Ohio. Along the way it skirts the Cedar Bog. 
 - Erie-Lackawanna

SIPPO VALLEY RAIL TRAIL

- Wayne County
- 9.5 miles paved (2.5 miles in Wayne County; 5.5 miles in Stark County)

STILLWATER RIVER RECREATION TRAIL  AKA Englewood Bike Trail Recreation Trail 
-Montgomery County
-2 miles paved (currently)
-Follows the Stillwater River
- Five Rivers MetroParks

-Trail will eventually be 3 miles long.

STAVICH BICYCLE TRAIL
-Mahoning County/Struthers, OH to New Castle, PA.
-10  miles/asphalt paved
-Stavich Foundation
-Interurban route, possibly of the Sharon and New Castle Railway
-Only "interstate" trail in Ohio. Adjacent to active CSX
Transportation line.

TRI-COUNTY TRIANGLE TRAIL This trail through Fayette, Highland and Ross counties is partially open
-
A total of 8.5 miles are completed and paved from Adena School Complex on County Road 550 to Frankfort and continues 6.5 miles east towards Chillicothe where it ends at Sulfur Lick Road.

52 miles when completed
-Tri-County Trail & Park Districts in Chillicothe, Fayette County and Ross County

-Abandoned Railroad - Washington Court House to Chillicothe - B&O

 - Trail will go from Batavia to Williamsburg with connection to Rocky Fork State Park

WOLF CREEK RECREATION TAIL

-This trail runs from Trotwood (Northwest of Dayton) 13 miles through Brookville to Verona Ohio.

WRIGHT BROTHERS' BIKEWAY  AKA as the Kauffman Avenue Bikeway and also as the Huffman Prairie Overlook Trail.
-Greene County/ Fairborn to Eastway Park via Huffman Reserve and Wright Brothers Memorial
-4.3 miles. Paved from Fairborn to Wright Brothers Memorial
-Greene County Parks & Recreation
-Conrail- It was the old Cincinnati and Lake Erie Traction Line or interurban which ran along this route from 1918 to 1939

XENIA STATION
-Is the hub of the Greene County trails. The  Little Miami Scenic Trail North to Springfield and South to Milford (near Cincinnati),
the  Creekside Trail , and the Prairie Grass Trail   connect with The Station The Xenia-Jamestown Connector will link to Jamestown and Washington-Court House. The Station is finished  Xenia on US Route 68 just South of the Courthouse. It has  a parking lot, restrooms and lockers.

XENIA-JAMESTOWN CONNECTOR (Opened 2005)
- Greene County
- Xenia Station (Southwest) to Jamestown 11 miles when completed.
- 6.5 miles completed Jasper Road to Jamestown
- Greene County Recreation and Parks
 -CSX Railroad
 -Trail will eventually connect to Washington Court House and Chillicothe in Ross County at the
- Tri-Country Triangle Trail  and is partially open.
