trail sections to be built. Also the cities of Piqua, Troy and Tripp City
will have to construct connecting sections so that the trail can start at
Taylorsville MetroPark in Montgomery County and end in Sidney in Shelby
County. There are 10 sections, Section One and Two are finished.

Trail Construction News in Miami County (See Below)
Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County)
The trail construction in Miami County consists of seven numbered sections and three cities. When completed a 22 miles long trail will stretch from Taylorsville MetroPark at the Northern border of Montgomery County through Tipp City, Troy, Piqua and Sidney in Shelby County. A short summary of each is below. In order to match the map above this discussion will start to the North near Sidney and work South. Please Print the Map which you can view above to understand the discussion below.
Trails
North to South from near Sidney
To Montgomery County (Taylorsville MetroPark)
Section 7
- From Hardin Road and Johnston
Historic Farm South on East bank of River to the Swift Run Water Plant trail on East side of SR 66
outside of Piqua. Trail section in planning stage The exact route of the trail has not yet been established
for this section and this is the only section in Miami County that does not
have some funding.
City of Piqua
Section 8 - From Swift Run
Water Plant using River's Edge Trail (Complete
3.6 miles) South to Lock Nine Park in downtown Piqua. From there the trail
will have to be built South to the Atomic Power Plant about 1/2 mile. Exact
route is not yet determined.
Section 6- From Nuclear Power Plant South on East Bank of Great Miami River to Peterson Road, about 2 miles. The trail will be on the East bank of the River to just South of the Piqua Activities Trail For Health and railroad bridge across the Great Miami River. The plan is to build this trail section in 2008 or 2009.
New Plans - The Miami County Parks
District and the City of Piqua recently received a Clean Ohio Grant
(October 2006) in the amount of $400,000 to build this
trail South from Piqua's Lock Nine Park through The Piqua Material Inc. property along the Miami River
to Peterson Road. For more details on this section's development and the
news release please see my February
2006 Newsletter. See Approved
Multi-Use Trail Projects for more on financing.
Section 5 - (Under Construction 2008 - 2009) Trail South from Peterson Road on West bank of river. Trail will go through Twin Arches Park on County Route 25A and go through the park at Eldean Road at the Covered Bridge. At the Covered Bridge the trail will cross back to the East bank of the river. The trail will continue South on the East bank of the river to Duke Park. From Duke Park the trail will continue South to Troy. Exact trail route has not yet been determined. Funds are earmarked, see above.
New Plans: The trail will be carried on the
East bank of the river South of Eldean Road and the covered bridge to
connect with the City of Troy Section at Duke Park. Completion date is
2009.
City of Troy Section 9 - The trail spur starts at Lytle Road and runs South two miles to Troy. The trail continues to First Island and Treasure Island on the West Bank of the River on North Elm Street. Follow the trail South from Treasure Island to the Adams Street Bridge left over the Miami River to the East Bank. From there the trail continues South at the river level under the Adams Street bridge. The trail continues South passing under the Market Street Bridge and the B&O railroad bridge to the old Power Plant.
Current plans call for the trail to
continue North on the East bank of the river from Community Park ultimately connecting
to Duke
Park. The trail will follow the existing trail in Duke Park and parallel a
new road to the Eldean Covered Bridge. Some construction will be completed
in 2007.
Section 2 -
(Completed July 2005) . The
Northern end of the trail starts at the old Power
Plant just South of downtown Troy and follows the East bank of the Great
Miami River South next to Miami Shores Golf Course and under the State Route
41 bridge. One half mile South of here is a old railroad bridge ("Big
4") that is used to take the trail over to the West bank of the River. There
is a spur to the East to connect to SR-202 where there is a parking lot on
SR-202. After crossing the bridge the trail continues
East until it reaches Dye Mill Road where there is another parking lot.
The trail follows along the East side of Dye Mill Road until it reaches
the North end of the existing 1.6 mile Section 1 of the Great
Miami River Recreation Trail (Miami County). Section 1 ends about
1/2 mile from the Tipp City Path at Crane Road.
Section 1 - Great
Miami River Recreation Trail Section 1 (Completed
2003) On Dye Mill Road at County
Route 25A in Concord Township. From Dye Mill Road South 1.6 miles to about
1/2 mile North of Crane Road just North of Tipp City.
Section 3 - Tipp City North to the existing 1.6 mile trail in Concord Township at Dye Mill Road and County Route 25A. $2.3M will be available in FY 08 for Section 3 & 4. Monroe Township is the sponsor for this trail section and the lead agency is Five Rivers MetroParks.
New Plans: Flagging will start soon
as well as clearing brush to mark the right of way for this trail and
Section 3. Then Environmental assessments will be accomplished. Construction
for Section 3 and Section 4 is now planned for 2008.
Tipp City Section 10 - Trail starts at Crane Road and will continue (when built) South through the Tipp City Parks Nature Center. The trail is complete from the Nature Center through City Park and Canal Lock Park (completed July 2005). The trail will be connected to Thomas B. Kyle Park in the South of Tipp City.
New Plans: The one
half mile trail between Canal
Lock Park South to Kyle Park is planned for construction in early
2008. The contract was signed January 2008 with Finfrock
Construction for $134,865. The trail is planned to be completed by early
Summer 2008.
Section 4 - From Kyle Park the trail will run down Old Canal Road to the Montgomery County Line at Old Springfield Rd/Ross Rd. This section is funded (see Section 3 above). After the trail crosses the county line it will connect to Taylorsville MetroPark to join the Great Miami River Recreation Trail (Northern Segment) at Old Springfield Rd./Ross Rd. and Crane Rd. The trail continues South through Taylorsville MetroPark. This trail (Taylorsville) will be connected to downtown Dayton at Triangle MetroPark and the trails there in 2007 & 2008.
New Plans: Flagging will start soon
as well as clearing brush to mark the right of way for this trail and
Section 3. Then Environmental assessments will be accomplished. Construction
for Section 3 and Section 4 is now planned for 2008.
