Steven Magas is known as Ohio’s “Bike Lawyer.” Steve is an avid cyclist and a trial lawyer with 35 years of courtroom experience. In the 1980s Steve’s passion for cycling led him to start working on “Bike Law” - legal issues of interest to cyclists. He also started handling cases for injured cyclists and the families of those killed while riding. Steve has handled more than 400 “bike cases” over the course of his career.
In addition to representing cyclists, Steve has written about Bike Law on a local, regional and national basis and is regularly called upon by TV and radio journalists when Bike Law issues pop up in the news. Steve sits on the Board of the Ohio Bicycle Federation, Ohio’s premier cycling advocacy group, for many years where he focuses on drafting and promoting new and improved “Bike Laws.” Steve also works with the legal committee of the League of American Bicyclists, which has drafted Model Laws such as its Vulnerable User Law. Steve continues to lecture regularly on numerous Bike Law topics and has presented Continuing Legal Education programs for lawyers. Steve brings his skills & experience as a trial lawyer, and his degree in Mathematics, to his ongoing “Fatal Crash Project” in which he reviews, in detail, EVERY fatal bicycle crash in Ohio.
Steve’s presentation is geared for cyclists and lawyers alike. It starts with the history of “the Bicycle” and its impact on society, different designs and how “the Safety” was really the game-changer that got men and women, young and old, into the game. The session covers the Good Roads Movement and then discuss the early development of traffic laws and “Bike Laws.” During the “Law” discussion I walk through common bike laws and Ohio’s bike laws. I spend some time discussing AFRAP, what it means and how to get around it, what is a “roadway” and how confusion about that definition has led to uncertainty for cyclists. I spend some time discussing some of the more practical legal and insurance aspects of cycling - how four different policies that YOU might have can all be triggered the moment you are tapped by a car.
Steve’s talk is free and open to the public. There is no need to register for this event. Event is co-sponsored by the Franklin-Springboro Public Library.
